Photos will not upload from iPhone to Windows PC

I have been trying to upload my photos and videos from my phone to my laptop to clear up space but every time I go to upload them, one of two errors pops up:

1. iPhone / photos on device not found
2. Photos start uploading to laptop and then after a couple of minutes (and only a couple of photos) "device is not working properly" or "error with device" pops up

I have tried so many different things to try and troubleshoot this and nothing seems to work. I have tried:

• Updating my laptop
• Updating my phone
• Updating iTunes
• changing picture format preference on iPhone
• restarting laptop / iPhone
• ensuring laptop has access to my photos by checking the "Trust this Computer" and "Allow access to photos" notifications that pop up
• making sure my iPhone stays unlocked while photos are downloading

I do not know what to do now to move my photos to my laptop.

Please help :)
