Yes, Baghdad is really for writing Arabic. Best to stay with fonts intended for English to avoid occasional odd behavior with symbols and punctuation.

Select the text of your example in the Mac Mail new message pane and change the font to Helvetica (or some others). Does the $ still display low like that?

What do you have selected for keyboard input source ? I would try making a change and compare your results.
