AppleWatch switching to no power when using Siri

Hi,

My AppleWatch 4 Cellular is behaving strangely lately.

I use it to go running, it is connected to my heart rate belt, uses the GPS, and music to my BlueTooth headset. I usually run an hour without problems.

Always 100% charged before running. On normal runs, it goes down to 80-85%.

But if I use Siri to create, say, a reminder while I run, it shows the low power logo and the time, then shuts down immediately.

I hard reset it to no avail, the apple logo shows up while booting and then the watch shuts down again and again.

Once back home, I set it on the charger and voilà, it boots and is at about 78% right away.

So I fully factory reset it and restored from backup several times. Still the same behavior when using Siri.

The restore might bring back a possible faulty setting, I don't know.

Note that when I fully erase it, I tell it to erase everything but keep the cell plan.

Now if I fully reset it to factory and DON'T restore it, in order to start fresh, then I will lose my cellular plan and have to pay again for reactivation as it won't be reactivated from the settings. And I have no guarantee that it will work better.

Any suggestion?

WatchOS 8.3

Thanks for any help

Steve J

Hello sjordi,

Apple Support Communities is a wonderful place for help with your Apple Watch, and the unexpected shut down you’re experiencing. You’ve walked through great troubleshooting steps to help isolate the issue and work towards a resolution, and we're glad to know you're running the latest watchOS. When you previously restarted the Apple Watch, did you also restart the companion iPhone? If not, this may be a helpful step. Try restarting both the Apple Watch and companion iPhone next.

Restart your iPhone

How to restart your Apple Watch

If you continue to have issues after restarting both devices, the next step would be to reaching out to Apple. You can find their contact options via the Get Support website.

Take care!

No, you won't. The watch will ask you if you want to remove it from the cellular plan or not. Just select "no".

As said I already did this.

Now if 83% is not good, then I think we don't share the same scale. To me 83% is a very good shape.

30% or under would be questionable though.

But I'll get a new one and start from fresh, without restoring, to make sure not to bring back possible faulty settings.

Thanks

Hi,

Yes I did.

Also, I'm running without any other device whatsoever.

The idea to have the cellular Apple Watch is to avoid running with a bulky phone.

So the Apple Watch is a standalone device during my runs.

I tried again today. Ran without problems for 55 min. Watch battery at 78%. Arrived home. Stopped the running activity.

Battery 78%.

Started a new one and after 2 seconds asked Siri. Went immediately to the red charging logo with the time and shut down

Put on the charger and booted immediately, this time at 59% and fully charged in about 20minutes.

Well, the scale that Apple uses for all their rechargeable batteries is that they are fit for use until they drop to 80% or below. In fact, this is pretty much the normal scale for rechargeable batteries.

But, far be it from me to deprive you of a reason to get a new toy!

Ha ha! That's correct. It could be a geeky toy.

Actually I don't consider it anymore as a toy since I use it on a daily basis for more than a gadget. It really helped me for being way lighter when going running or biking every other day, and not waking everybody up in the morning by just having it vibrate.

I may wait for Fall and a possible Watch 8. For now I'll just stop using Siri while jogging. I can live with that.

It works as expected when not recording an activity though. That's what led me to think it's more a software issue than a hardware. Without exercise, my watch lasts about 20 hours even when listening to music.

I'll change if it suddenly turns out as a device I have to struggle with rather than use and enjoy.

Just keep in mind that once your battery reaches 80% and below it will get even more flaky causing a myriad issues and like all lithium polymer batteries it has the potential for swelling which will push the screen away from the watch and damage the logic boards costing you much more to fix it. And the 80% replacement for lithium polymer batteries comes from the battery manufacturers not from Apple.

I meant it in the best possible way! I have a Watch 4 and have been trying to decide when to replace it. I'll probably get the battery replaced soonish as mine is also about 83% and then replace the watch after the fuss dies down when the next one is released.

That's a good point. I've been putting off making arrangements to have my battery replaced as it's not quite there. But I should get on it as it will probably take ages to get an appointment.
