I have an old iphone5, I received a new one a few years after that, and now I have a newer one. I want to sell/get rid of the 5 but my id and password have changed. Needless to say, I don’t even remember the password. How can I clear everything out (besides manually) and sign out? Thanks for your help!

If you don't know the appleID password that last avtivated that phone then you need to take it, the original receipt or email receipt and some personal ID to an Apple Store. Otherwise you need to recycle it for free at the store.
If you can't remember the old id and password the phone is unsaleable
You would be selling a useless phone.
I have the same problem! Old iphone 7 which won't allow me to erase content/reset as 'Verification Failed - There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server'. My apple ID has changed since i used this phone and i can't work out how to change it.
Is there any way to do a hard reset?
I can still sell it for peanuts with gizmogo but if I clear my id I can get more. But thanks.
