You're missing a button in that TM preference pane to select a disc:
So boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and check to see if the button is there. Then reboot normally and check again.
You said:I just attach 1 external disk at a time - "I use WD My Passport. They backup well, if a bit slowly "
Have you successfully used this disk with Monterey? Some users have problems with WD drives w/Monterey.
can you place your cursor over the list of TM disks (inside the red rectangle as seen below) and then scroll down and see if the "Select Disk" button as shown by Old Toad appears?
What shows when you click on the red dot with an i inside?
How many external disks are attached to you Mac?
How many were used in the past for Time Machine?
If you have not uses an external disk , what have you been using? For example network disk.

"Time Machine could not complete Backup...disk not available" [I am able to complete Backup 3. I'd like to delete Backup 2, and I have renamed Backup 4 - but since I have no "Select Disk" option
I just attach 1 external disk at a time - I use WD My Passport. They backup well, if a bit slowly
I've used, recently, 3 backup drives - but I am unable to scroll down the list as I used to, and have no way to delete any of them, nor add any more
No. Doesn't scroll down.
Tried 3x - did not work.
