Every several minutes my laptop freezes for several seconds, even losing the pointer from the mouse, and then comes back, only to do it again.
What's causing this? Is there something I can do about it, or does it need to go into Apple store (which is closed)?

"Safe Mode" eliminates possible effects of user-installed system modifications that might have explained the occasional unresponsiveness you are experiencing. If the same problems manifest while running in that mode, it raises the likelihood of hardware-related failure.
Sometimes, merely starting a Mac in "Safe Mode" followed by restarting normally will remedy whatever had been affecting it (due to certain actions Safe Mode performs), but you tried that and it didn't help.
You can try reinstalling macOS: Reinstall macOS - Apple Support, but it seems likely that you will need to contact Apple and arrange for a hands-on inspection.

Then, restart your Mac normally (not "Safe Mode") and determine if the problems persist.
Thanks, but That didn't work - actually, it's freezing up more frequently than before.
2014 model MacBook running 10.14.6 if that matters.

Yes they did - I ran in Safe Mode for a while and was still freezing & then unfreezing.
