How can i reduce the storage of photos on my mac book pro?

I would like to minimize iPhoto's use of storage on my MacBook hard drive.

I have an iCloud account, but there seems to still be over 60 Gigs of photos on my hard drive. Is there a way to reduce this storage space requirement?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.6

Yes. Optimize your photos.

Open Photos

Photos > Preferences > iCloud

Select Optimize Mac Storage
