How to upgrade el captain 10.11.6

I have an older max(20") with El Capitan 10.11.6 on it. I have always been a PC guy, and built my own systems. I wanted to learn iMac soI bought this one to LEARN. All it had on it was the operating system. my question is what can I upgrade to? THANKS!!

A 20-inch iMac can't be upgraded past El Capitan if that far.

THANKS, Now I can get on LEARNING. I want to just get the basic's down, sort of know how the file system ect. works. I knew this one was old. Anyway, THANKS!! I really appreciate the help!
