MacBook Air 2013 won’t start after software install

I have a 2013 MacBook Air on OSX El Capitan, tried to install macOS Sierra after clearing 11 GB storage. I read that I needed 8gb of storage. After running the installation package got an error message indicating there wasn’t enough space and the installation failed. Now when I try to restart I login but receive an error message. I would like go back and install my back up but I can’t access disk utility.

Attached are the error messages I get. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.

Force shut off your Mac by pressing and holding the power button or Touch ID sensor. Then, turn it back on and try again.

If the issue persists, startup into Safe Mode and test: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support.

Also, do you have access to another Mac?

thanks, I have tried to restart several times with the same message being displayed. I tried your method of starting safe mode however it doesn’t seem to work… I enter my password and it starting loading but never logs in. I also don’t see indication of safe mode or safe boot anywhere on the screen.

I am able to borrow someone else’s MacBook if I need to. What do you have in mind?
