Can't Install MacOS Update

Hi,

We have an employee in our organization that is trying to update his Mac to MonterreyOS. Whenever he tries to update the software, it gives an error such as "An error occurred while installing the update".

We have tried installing a CatalinaOS security update as well, which gives the same error. I was able to upgrade my mac to MacOS Monterrey just fine with no issues, so not sure why his is showing this error.

Multiple troubleshooting steps have been tried:

Mac is compatible and has enough storage
Installing in recovery mode, and then safe mode
Reinstalling the current OS
Tried 2 different internet connections
Used disk utility to repair disk, no issues
Resetting the NVRAM
Delete the installer from the files then download and install from app store
Firewall is turned off

Tried each step and then tried to reinstall the CatalinaOS Security update. It still gave the same error each time.

Not sure what else to try at this point.

What year MacBook Pro?

What is version number present installed?

Some users have experienced problems skipping macOS updates

I would try updating to Big Sur. You can get it here:

Also disable any VPNs, uninstall any Internet security apps, antivirus apps and "cleaning apps".

You also need an Apple disk installed internally to go to Monterey.

Can you install Big Sur on an external disk? Maybe a problem with internal disk.

If the problem existing while installing the Catalina Security update - attempting to upGrade to Monterey or for that matter Big Sur may or may not solve the issue or could even amplify the existing issue with Catalina Security update.

IMHO - the Catalina issue needs to fixed before attempting any further upgrades to newer versions of macOS.

Thanks for the reply.

It's a Macbook Pro, 16 inch (2019).

Current OS: Catalina 10.15.7

Storage: Macintosh HD 500 GB

Since the mac has an Apple disk, I'll check the other things you've mentioned and get back to you.

Tried to update to Big Sur by downloading it from the app store, and that did not work.

Next, we tried a reset. Booted into internet recovery mode, erased hard drive, then reinstalled Catalina OS.

Finally, tried to install the Catalina Security Update 2021-008 and it gave this error:

Thanks, that's a good point. We have been trying to install the Catalina security update before upgrading the OS, once we noticed the update was available.
