Having Trouble Trying To Paste Folder Icons From One Local Folder To Another.

Hi all,

I’m using M1 Mac - Monterey 12.1 and I am having trouble trying to paste folder icons from one local folder to another.

- on folder 1 - I get info and copy the top left icon

- on folder 2 - I get info and try to paste - end it just beeps and will not let me paste the icon from folder 1 two folder number two.

This has worked for many years however there’s something with Monterey that is preventing this.

Q: is there a way to allow me to copy the icon from some folder and paste onto some other folder - without errors?

Hi - folder 2 was just one I made for testing

all the folders had the same basic permissions...

I just did your - Finder, Edit > Show Clipboard. and right now it is showing OK and also working ok...

So I guess it was the good vibes from you both that did the magic!!! Ha Ha! 😄

What is folder 2? Is it somehow protected?

Also, in Finder, Edit > Show Clipboard. Make sure there is an image there to paste.

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having some issues pasting folder icons from the Get Info window. We'd like to see how we can help out.

To double-check, what's the location of these folders? Does it happen with folders stored in a particular location, or anywhere?

Depending, you may want to try creating a temporary administrator account to see if you can replicate the issue there as well. This will determine if it's system-wide or user account-specific: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Well, I made the 2 test folders right on the desktop.

A few days ago it was not working - but crazy enough now it is...

A few days ago I could not copy from the 1st folder and paste on second - BUT I was able to drag the first folder on top of the get info folder icon of the second....

hmmm now it seems to all be working

Well, to answer your question - sometimes after I copy the icon - there IS an image in the clipboard and sometimes it says clipboard contents: none.

It seems that when I try to copy the source icon - at some point, it breaks and then will not copy for a while and I will get clipboard contents: none.

I always use cmd-C to copy... Could it be that some of my very old icon images (created years ago) are not in a format for Monterey? Also if I drag the source folder onto the get info icon of destination folder - that same image seems to work every time...

I don’t know why it’s not copying unless it isn’t actually an image. The icon may be an icons file attached. If you copy it, I don’t imagine it would actually copy the image in the icon.

Dragging one icon to the other will copy the icons file. That will work in certain situations.
