Considering buying a Macbook Air to replace Macbook Pro 16” 2019

Good evening,

I use my Macbook Pro 2019 16” mainly to do some basic 4K editing eith FCPX. I have 16GB of RAM and 512 SSD. I was thinking to get the new Macbook Air with M1 Chip, 16GB of Ram and 1TB SSD. I find that my Pro is crashing all the time with Final Cut and I was reading theat the M1 chip outperforms the Intel chip.

I know I will lose in ports and screen size but I can live with that.

Thank you in advance for your input dear community.

MacBook Air (2020 or later)

Before you lay out money, try etrecheck (https://etrecheck.com). The creator is a senior contributor who made this to detect issues with hardware, MacOS and even some things you might have forgotten you installed (just saying ...).

There is a trick to posting the report, which I am ashamed to admit I do not know ... someone else knows and I hope chimes in.

Does your current 2019 MacBook Pro 16" have the i7 intel processor? It is still a very capable Machine. It is also less than 3 years old. You know, your current machine should be able to hand FCP with ease.

Having said all that, You will see a performance improvement with the M1 MacBook Air 16GB. What I am unsure about is how much performance improvement. If you have the i7 Intel with 16GB and a dedicated Graphics card in your current MacBook Pro, then you may see marginal or no difference using FCP. I also feel that you will miss the screen size real estate with this change (16 vs 13.3).

If you really want to see some noticeable and meaningful improvement then my recommendation is to go with the new 14 inch M1 MacBook Pro and 16GB.

Have you tried putting your current MacBook Pro into recovery mode and reinstalling macOS and other data from scratch? This may resolve your FCP crashing.
