Making a new icloud account your primary account on mac

I am trying to make my new icloud account my primary account on my mac so I can continue using messages, email, and things of that nature connected to my phone. It allowed me to add my new account but not make it primary. So as of right now my mail, messages, and pictures etc from my phone are not connected to my mac. When i try to create an icloud email username for this account it does not work. Any suggestions?

There isn't any such designation of primary for your Apple ID. If you wish to change your Apple ID and retain all purchases, messaging, etc. follow the guidance at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202667.

If you create a new Apple ID (not generally recommended), you'll need to sign out of iCloud and connected services with your old ID and sign in with the new. Start at System Preferences > Apple ID
