Obsolete iPhoto app

Are the photo files formerly accessed by iPhoto automatically transferred to the Photos app? I am running Catalina OS 10.15.7

MacBook Pro 13″, OS X 10.11

It can be automatic, but it is safer to launch Photos with the option key held down and choose your iPhoto Library. Photos will create a new library with your iPhoto media.
