Mac desktop files folders disappeared

I'm having trouble navigating the many topics addressing this subject and the many recommendations and arguments about what works.

Is there any simple summary addressing how to recover desktops that have disappeared?

2010 iMac, OSX 10.13.6, yes, I'm a dinosaur. I haven't kept up with Apple's constant changes.

Wait, if I go to Prefrences and turn off iCloud I get a warning items will be removed from my Desktop and Documents folder from the Mac and left only in iCloud.

That's exactly backwards from what I want. I want my computer to be my tool, I don't want everything taken out of the Mac and left only in iCloud.

And after that warning, I see "New items added to your Desktop or your Documents folder on this Mac will no longer be stored in iCloud Drive.: -- yeah, that would be what I do want.

Can someone help me with a step by step method to disconnect iCloud without removing everything from my Mac?

Just leave what's now no iCloud so I can pick and choose from that later on.

OK, it appears the files still exist, under my username, in folders named "iCloud Drive (Archive)" -- five of them, one (most recent) unnumbered, the rest numbered -1 to -4.

How do I stop this from being created and get the files and folders back on the Mac desktop?

and not lose them again?

Again this is an older Mac and the latest OS it will install is 10.3, so most of the advice I find doesn't match.

Please be patient with me, I know there are a lot of very smart people here.

Argh. I woke up this AM to find all the desktop files were gone again.

I tried the fixes suggested; all the desktop files warned me they were being copied to an archive, then reappeared.

Half an hour later all the desktop files are gone again.

I suspect the other household computer and couple of iPhones have contrdictory settings and files are bein shuttled off and on the desktops depending on which Apple appliance happens to wake up first.

Is this something one of Apple's genius employees would be able to explain>
