How do I find and recover the folders and desktop items that have disappeared? I seem to find most, if not all, have now migrated to "Recents" but cannot get them back to the desktop. I believe this occurred shortly after updating an app on the iMac.

THAT WAS IT! Thank you so much for your helpful suggestion. By clicking on the desktop & documents folders in icloud options all the missing stuff magically appeared. I appreciate the help!
Did iCloud Drive get enabled perchance?
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
Yes, the problem persists, even when booting up in safe mode. I should have also mentioned in my initial posting that this has occurred both on my iMac and my Macbook Pro computers, both at the same time. Something within the past week has caused this, but I don't know what it might have been.
Look in the System/Apple ID/iCloud preference pane and if the iCloud Drive is checked. If it is click on the Options button and see if Desktop & Documents Folders is checked.
