GarageBand AND MUSIC FILES lost in upgrade of Macbook Pro

I had GarageBand on my late-2011 Macbook Pro, and SLIGHTLY upgraded to a 2012 Macbook Pro with SSD and Catalina. Now my GarageBand has disappeared, and it's not in the App Store under purchases. I have a LOT of files in GarageBand that I suddenly can't access. When I try to "GET" it from the App Store it says my OSX is too LOW! I need 11. But this machine is not capable of that.

Where are my files, and how can I recover my music and put Garage Band on my new machine?

Thanks for any help!

I used Migration Assistant when transferring my old machine's apps and files to the new machine. But the update (maybe the one to Catalina) means that the GarageBand and some other apps show up in my menu with the "bars" across them, and say they need to be updated and can't be used. When I go to try to update GarageBand, it gives me that message about needing OSX 11.

The version from your TimeMachine backup is probably too old for Catalina, that's why you're getting the icon with the "bars" across them. And obviously the version currently on the App Store is too new, requiring macOS 11 or higher.

You could contact Apple Support and see if they could provide you with a download link to the previous, Catalina-compatible version. They may or may not be able to provide that, if they still have it up somewhere.

You could also do a fresh install of Catalina on the computer via Recovery (not your Time Machine backup) which would also reinstall all of the default apps, including GarageBand. You could then transfer all of your data and documents back to the computer from your Time Machine backup using Migration Assistant.
