Airdrop users on ipads

I am new to the Apple iPads, and a senior. Can anyone tell me if airdrop only works in your own home, that is to share files, videos, and pictures between lets say your iPhone , iPads, or your apple desktop, or perhaps you have others visiting with apple devices, and they want to receive the airdrop information as well.

What I was hoping to do was to send a large number of photos, and the occasional video to my sister, who lives in a small town approx. 35 miles from us. She too has an ipad, and we have, I believe our settings set up properly. Blue tooth, and Wifi turned on, and receiving from anyone. I appreciate any help.

Thank you.

Hi highriver2020, thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities.

AirDrop is a great option to share media with others. However, it can only be used when sending to nearby devices which is explained in the following link https://support.apple.com/en-au/guide/iphone/iphcd8b9f0af/ios

To send multiple media to your sister may also be an issue via email depending on the size of the media. As such you may want to consider other options such as 'WeTransfer' or USB storage devices.

Perhaps the easiest native method of sharing photos, files and other content with other users of Apple devices - without reliance upon third-party file sharing platforms - is to use functionality that is already built-in to iOS/iPadOS/macOS using iCloud.

Not being able to use airdrop for this, you should consider an external drive because email will not work either - all email providers have a maximum file size for attachments which will be exceeded easily with a video. You may want to consider an online site where you can store such files and allow access to your sister.
