Mac Air will not accept my password. It has never showed forgot password. How can I get it yo bring up forgot password?

I can’t sign in with my password. It will not bring up forgot password. I restarted and tried using the option and R. Nothing changed. I restarted and used the command, and nothing changed. How can I sign in? Help!
