iMac shuts down instead of sleeping

I have a new iMac 24 inch. OS Monterey Version 12.1. When left idle, it completely shuts down, rather than going into sleep mode. There is no way in the EnergySaver to change this. I have set it to "Turn display off - Never" so that I don't have to turn it on 20 times per day and hope this works, but know it is not good for the computer to never go into sleep mode.

How can I enable sleep mode instead of having to power up the computer every time I return to my office?

Hey jlpate,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! We understand your iMac appears to shut down when left idle, instead of going into a Sleep mode. Let's help.

Does the same thing happen if you manually choose to put your iMac to sleep following these suggestions: Put your Mac to sleep or wake it. Meaning, does it shut down instead of sleep when you do that?

You checked Energy preferences. Did you ensure there are no schedules set up to shut down? Schedule your Mac desktop computer to turn on or off. If you have your iMac connected to a UPS, check: Set when your Mac shuts down while using a UPS.

Do you have either of these options enabled: Set sleep and wake settings for your Mac, "Keep your Mac from going to sleep automatically: Click Power Adapter, then select “Prevent your Mac from sleeping automatically when the display is off.”

"Put hard disks to sleep: Click Battery or Power Adapter, then select “Put hard disks to sleep when possible.” If so, can you disable those and test for resolution.

Do you have any external displays or other peripherals connected to your iMac, besides a mouse and keyboard? If so, when you disconnect those does the behavior continue?

If you were able to rule out a setting as the cause of this behavior, we would suggest resetting the SMC and monitoring for improvement: How to reset the SMC of your Mac

Best regards.

jlpate,

Thanks for the update. You're right about resetting the SMC. If you have a Mac with Apple silicon, you would just restart the computer.

Have you tried repairing your disk to see if that has a postitive impact on this behavior? If not, give that a go next: How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility

If the behavior continues, you'll want to get in touch with Apple Support directly so they can continue investigating this issue: Get Support

Take care and stay well.

Disable Sleep, it’s unnecessary on later Macs, all pain, no gain. To disable, check “Prevent…” in Energy Preferences and uncheck everything else. You can set the display off time to your preference, say 30 minutes, unrelated to Sleep. Shut your Mac for long absences i.e. > 2 hours or overnight (but it’s not a must unless you’re away for days/weeks at a stretch).

Thank you for your response. I tried each of the steps you suggested, except resetting the SMC, because those instructions are for an Intel Processor. This iMac has an M1 processor. Nothing has solved the problem. The computer will not sleep at all, it simply shuts down completely and has to be started from scratch each time. Also, today, it had problems opening Safari windows (hit or miss), and gave me this message: Safari can’t open the page. The error is: “The operation couldn’t be completed. No space left on the device” (NSPOSIXErrorDomain:28)

I am beginning to wonder if I got a lemon. This is all annoying, because it is preventing me from being able to work efficiently!! Help??!!!
