Third party verification codes

I have a brand new iPad Pro 11 set up from my old iPad automatically. While I can receive text messages ok, I cannot receive verification codes sent by text from certain third party apps and sites (AT&T and my bank, so far). Someone suggested doing a reset, but that seem extreme since I’d lose so much data. Anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

If you have an iPhone - and both iPad and iPhone are signed-in to iCloud with the same AppleID - to send and receive SMS/MMS messages from your iPad, you must explicitly enable Text Message Forwarding for your [new] iPad on your iPhone. Verify these settings:

On your iPhone:

Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding - set to ON - and explicitly enable your iPad from the list of devices.

Also ensure that Messages in iCloud is enabled on both your iPhone and iPad:

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > Messages - set to ON

Having now successfully enabled Text Message Forwarding, a forced-restart of your iPad may be helpful in fully restoring services.

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

Thank you! Tweaking my old phone by enabling “text message forwarding” solved my problem. But interestingly, when I enabled “Messages in iCloud” I discovered I couldn’t import the access code into the app’s code field by simply tapping on it as it appeared above the keyboard. That was a feature I always found to be extremely convenient. Also, that feature was not enabled in my previous iPad or my old phone, and they always worked fine.
