FCPX Crashing

Can anyone offer a glimmer of hope please. I've recently upgraded my Mac Book Pro and running a system with the following spec:

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)

2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9

32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

mac OS Monterey 12.1

After a recent OS upgrade, I'm having terrible problems with FCPX crashing - it always happens when selecting the 'effects' browser. Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks so much!

You have a huge number of system modifications. Some are obviously too old and some should never be used.

One known offender is Chrome. Completely uninstall it and its “keystone” daemons and agents. See https://chromeisbad.com for an explanation. You then need to delete and reinstall FCP.

One other bad thing is Monolingual. The idea that you can or should delete stuff from languages that you don’t use leads to damaged applications that may work or not, and even fail to start. And all for a negligible amount of drive space.

Some examples of old stuff: flip4mac; and, though very useful, the version of Soundflower is too old for your system.

Seriously consider a ful backup followed by a clean install and the migration of ONLY the user accounts.

A few things stand out. One, you have Chrome installed and its keystone daemons, which should be removed. http://www.chromeisbad.com. After you delete those and reboot, you should reinstall the application from the App Store. Two, you have an App Cleaner that I don't trust. Three, you have a lot of obsolete stuff that you've been dragging around for a while, stuff installed in 2012 and 2014 and more. When you do a system upgrade, like Big Sur to Monterey, you should always do a clean install. Wipe the drive, install the new system, and migrate only the users, then reinstall the applications you need.

You might also try removing all the third party effects, and see if the problem persists. If not, reinstall the plugins in batches to see if you can narrow down the problem.

The crash report is meaningful for developers but not much to the rest of us.

What we need is to know more about the software modifications that are installed.

Thanks Tom,

FCPX preferences have been trashed about five time. I do have third party effects installed and have carried out updates. Is this the type of EtreCheck you need?

Thanks Luis,

I've had Chrome on my Mac Book for a number of years and it has never caused an issue with FCPX in the past. Having read various forums, many people are saying there is a problem between Monterey and the latest version of FCP.

Certainly not - see my previous post. You have so much old stuff that is no wonder your system is unstable.

I am using FCP daily on my own 2019 16" MBP, and it works great, FWIW.
