Change way of putting accents on a letter

Since I have replaced my 2015 MB Pro with a 2020 MB Pro, the way of placing an accent on a letter (e.g. é) changed.

Old situation: holding the letter (e) and selecting from list (2->é)

New situation: same, but also addition of first typing the accent ('), then the letter (e -> é)

However, I don't like that I can't use the symbol ', without pressing space afterwards.

Is it possible to change this, so I can only use the old situation? I'm using US-International Keyboard lay-out

MacBook Pro (2020 and later)

Go to system preferences > keyboard > input sources and use the minus button to get rid of the US International PC layout. Instead use the layouts called US or ABC.

(US International PC is a special layout for some users who want to make accented characters the way you have described)

The same functionality for placing an acute accent on the letter e has not changed in years. On macOS 12.1 and Pages v11.2, I can enter and hold letter e to get the menu where I select 2 to create é. Additionally, I can press option+e, release those keys and then type the letter e to also get é.

The above works with either U.S. or U.S. International - PC keyboard settings, and assumes that you are using an Apple-branded keyboard.

Thanks so much. Didn't know that was a feature of the international keyboard lay-out. Apparently that was not the setting I was using on my old MB.

Sometimes layouts change for no obvious reason, or sometimes users with an English International keyboard on their machine mistakenly choose the US International layout on setup because of the name similarity.
