MacBook Air headphone jack isn't working

On my Mac the headphone jack isn't working, I've tried it with multiple headphones but sound won't play through it. What do I do?

Hi pix114,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! We see you're having an issue with sound from a plugged in headset, and we'd like to help.

Have you restarted your MacBook Air since noticing this happening? If not, go ahead and do that, as a restart can resolve unexpected issues.

Shut down or restart your Mac

If still happening, are you hearing no sound, or is the sound coming through the internal speakers instead?

  • If sound is coming through the internal speakers instead, check the settings at Apple  Logo > System Preferences > Sound > Output tab. Make sure the headset is selected.
  • If no sound at all, try testing with a different user profile: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac
  • If no sound still with another user, and since you've tried multiple headsets, which work with other devices, you may want to have a technician examine your MacBook Air: Mac Service and Repair

Take care!
