how do i update from os x el capitan

I purchased this computer locally, it came from one of the local high schools. I use it for my Cricut Printer/Cutter. It worked perfectly fine, then the app I was using did an update and now is requiring me to update my computer. I have tried and tried, thought I had figured it out, but once I tried installing the update it told me it wasn't going to work with my computer. Does anyone know how I can update to something more current or am I S.O.L?

It is currently running on OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 and its an iMac 9,1.

Any advice is appreciated.

It can't be upgraded past El Capitan.
