Airpod Max do not play sound on Mac, even though showing connected

Searched high and low for the fix to this. Most "solutions," say to reset Airpod Max - which I have don'e numerous times and doesn't fix. This is ONLY a problem with the Max's, NOT my Airpod v.2's or Airpod Pro's. They connect just fine. The Max's connectivity is very spotty. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I thought I may had found a workaround for this (NOT a fix, as it keeps happening). Go to Apple menu>System Preferences>Sound>Output and select Airpod Max as Output device. Works sometimes, but then usually reverts back to Internal Speakers. Hard to believe my $550 Airpod Max's can't keep a connection, but my Airpod Pro's have no issues...

I am running macOS Big Sur v.11.6.2 on a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017). And, yes, I have connected all of my Airpods (v.3, Pro, and Max) to my Mac with Bluetooth. Hence, the issue I am having with them disconnecting AFTER being connected. Another workaround I have found (but it still doesn't keep the Max Bluetooth connection from failing sometimes) is to always connect the Max's to my MacBook BEFORE attempting to use as audio with MS Teams, Zoom, or simply in listening to online audio content (YouTube, etc.). This behavior doesn't happen near as often when connecting my Max's to my iPhone, but still does sometimes.
