Upgrading and FCP7

I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) that's currently running El Capitan 10.11.6. I also use Final Cut Pro 7 as my chosen editing software (I know it's rather dated). Is it possible for me to upgrade my system while maintaining compatibility with FCP7, and if so, how high can I upgrade it? Thank you for your time.

Is this backup a full bootable clone if your internal drive? If so, yes. A Time Machine backup CANNOT be used to boot your mac, though.

You should test before upgrading.

Start your mac holding down the Option key. You will be presented with the available bootable drives. Is your external available? Choose it, and check that things work.
