stop screen from minimizing
how do I stop my screen from minimizing when I click too far to the upper left hand corner

Seems like you have that action set of the upper left corner in Hot Corners.

Go to System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen Saver.
On the bottom right corner of the screen saver window, you will find the Hot Corners option. Click on it to open Hot corners setup.
