There are no guarantees. There's always the possibility of damage even if using a case. The one thing I will say about a case is that there can be all sorts of stuff that builds up inside a case between the device. I use a silicone case, and sometimes I wash it thoroughly because it's just nasty inside after a while. Also the iPhone may need to be cleaned.
