Things not updating between devices

Here's a weird one for you... I have an iPhone 12 Mini, an Apple Watch (series 1), an iPad 6th generation, & a MacBook Pro running macOS Monterey, version 12.0.1. The watch is running the latest OS; the iPad & iPhone are being updated right now, but let's assume for a second that that doesn't solve my issue, which is...

I've noticed for a while now that when I do something on one device, it doesn't translate over to the other devices (& this happened with my previous MacBook Pro, too - I just got my current one about a month ago). For instance, I have a medication reminder on my "Reminders" app. It will pop up on my watch, & when I tap "completed", it still pops up about 3 more times. That's annoying enough, but when I open any of my other devices, they're there as alerts, too. I have to tap the little circle next to the reminder on EACH device for it to go away. That sounds like an iCloud problem, right? Buuuuut...

If I get a message via Facebook Messenger, & I read it on one device, it will still show up with the red number 1 on my other devices, as if I haven't read it! And then when I go into that app on the other devices, I don't even have to go into that message, just the app, & the alert will disappear. Huh??

It's as though my devices don't talk to each other, but I know they do. They're all on the same WiFi network (when I'm at home, of course), & say I'm on my computer & I open something up on my phone, it will pop up in the dock so I can go from one device to the other. So I really don't understand this. If anyone can help (& talk to me like I'm an idiot, please, I'm not good with technobabble), I'd really appreciate it. Thank you so much!

Hi AliciaWag,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! It looks like you're some issues with syncing between devices, and we'd like to help.

Starting with the Reminder which appears on other devices. This is expected if you have Reminders selected to sync with iCloud.

Use Reminders on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

"Set up iCloud to keep your reminders updated across all your devices. Open the Settings app, then tap [your name] > iCloud and turn on Reminders. Inside the Reminders app, you'll see all of your reminders on all of your Apple devices that are signed in to the same Apple ID."

Facebook Messenger is a third-party app, which may be why you need to view on another device for it to sync. You can check with the app developer about that.

How to contact an app developer

Here's additional information about syncing issues with iCloud and Reminders, Contacts and Calendars:

If your iCloud Contacts, Calendars, or Reminders won’t sync

Take care!

Hey AliciaWag,

Thanks for your reply!

As we mentioned in the last reply, it's expected to get Reminders on all devices which have Reminders enabled for iCloud.

An idea, if you don't want to get the medication reminder on more than one device, is to use the Clock app on your iPhone > Alarm tab:

How to set and change alarms on your iPhone

You can get the alarm on your iPhone and paired Apple Watch, if you enabled the setting to see on both.

Add an alarm on Apple Watch > "See the same alarms on both iPhone and Apple Watch"

We hope this helps!

Hi - sorry it's taken me a few days to get back. Yes, I do want to get Reminders on all devices which are enabled. My issue isn't actually getting the Reminders. My issue is that, for instance, when I get the Reminder on my watch for my medication, & I click "completed" on my watch, I still see the alert for the reminder on all of my other devices. Once I click "complete" on any of the devices, the alert should disappear on all devices, but it doesn't. If you know how to fix that, please do let me know! Thanks.
