caps lock indicator incorrect on log-in screen

Caps-lock can get out of sync with the keyboard and the OS on the login screen. The green light on the key and the indicator in the password box do not agree. Only that on-screen indicator mater in the end, ignore what the keyboard says.

This can lead to frustratingly reentering a password without realizing the capslock is on.

This is a 2017 era MacBook Pro 15-inch running BigSur (11.6.2) but I've seen this behavior on other models and OS versions.

Looking back through discussions, this problem has been around since at least 2015.

I've actually personally encountered this issue with one of our USB-C Apple laptops. An SMC Reset and PRAM Reset did not help in my case. The Caps Lock issue was happening every time at the login screen until I swapped Logic Boards between two laptops to determine if this was an issue with the Keyboard or Logic Board. Unfortunately the issue did not show up again and when I reassembled the parts to the original laptop everything has been working fine ever since. It is the first and only time I've ever seen this issue. Once logged into the laptop, the Caps Lock was working properly. Filevault was enabled on this laptop.

These boilerplate "submit a bug, clear cache, or reinstall the OS" replies are really not very helpful.

Especially for a bug that has been around for 7+ years.

Yours is the fisrt and only time I have heard this issue—which makes me suspect...

You can get a good look at your System config. and reveal conflicts or issues, you can download/run this trusted utility https://etrecheck.com

If you need help interpreting the report you can post it here in its entirety in the "Additional Text" box in the editing toolbar below, in your reply.
