Password vs Passcode?.

Please advise somewhat the difference between the password & passcode as had been led to the impression fingerprint reader was supposed to take care of this. Now I’m having trouble on a reset of the “PASSWORD” as it pertains to downloading of apps via the App Store.

The passcode is what you use to open the lock screen on your iPad -- it is needed to set up Touch ID (fingerprint) and is needed ever time you restart your iPad even if you have Touch ID set up.

The password for downloading apps is your Apple ID password. If you only have one Apple ID it is the same password that you used to log into this forum.

If you have used more than one Apple ID, the one you used when you purchased or originally downloaded an app remains associated with that app.

Password for your Apple ID. On a new Apple device you generally have to use your password once for purchasing apps (or Apple Books etc.), before you can use Touch ID. You’ll get another password prompt if you add another Touch ID fingerprint, when next going to download an app.

Passcode, is the passcode to get into, and unlock your device. Similar to before, when restarting your device, or not having entered the passcode for a certain length of time, you’ll get prompted to use your passcode instead of using Touch ID.

Both of the above are for security reasons.

Thank you for the clarification. It was helpful, however it seems although I’m in this forum somehow I’ve forgotten or I’m off a digit or two on my password. The first attempt to reset was met with a response of it would take several days in order for this process to be facilitated. I knew this wasn’t going to be the case. So after researching a little more I think Ive found an answer hopefully which should just allow me to retrieve my passcode or reset it just as I would any other device.
