I am having problems with using Touch ID on my new iPad Air 4. I very frequently have to enter my Apple password to navigate. Any suggestions?

I am elderly and my hands are always very dry. I am always having problems using Touch ID on my new Apple iPad Air 4. I very frequently have to enter my Apple password to navigate. I have updated my fingerprints several times and they may work for awhile but then stop working again. Please help.

iPad Air, iPadOS 15

The TouchID sensor will struggle if you have very dry skin - as (a) the capacitive trigger-ring that surrounds the sensor may not recognise that you finger is present, and (b) fingerprint ridge-detail may not be sufficiently defined. This is a fundamental limitation of the sensor technology.

The behaviour that you report is unlikely to be due to a fault. Unfortunately, you are one of the few for whom TouchID many not be a usable technology.

Whilst you always have the fallback option of using your iPad Passcode, an iPad pro with FaceID may be a better choice.

Hey there DedEndDee,

Congrats on getting your new iPad! We'd like to help get your Touch ID working right on it.

As it was unclear, did you follow the steps in the link above your post? Keep in mind that one of the last steps would be to have it inspected at an Apple service location, or to contact Apple Support directly.

Here's the link again just in case: If Touch ID isn't working on your iPhone or iPad

Cheers!
