Why is iphone back up so slow?
My new phone showed "not backed up"; so I'm doing an icloud back up which is literally taking hours. It's now been at least 5 hours and it still says "6 hours remaining."

Most home internet connections have a much slower upload speed compared to the download. The first backup will take a long time, but other backups should take less time.

Did you plug the phone into an MBP and take a backup? iCloud is a "synchronize" operation where items deleted from iPhone disappear from iCloud. Backup using Finder on an MBP does not synchronize with every iPhone change.
Is also fast.
However, Backup to iCloud is completely separate and unrelated to sync with iCloud, and doesn’t overlap with sync. The only point of commonality is they both have the word “iCloud” in their description. An iCloud backup is similar to a computer backup, except that it keeps the 2 most recent copies rather than the one that a computer backup keeps. And like a computer backup it only includes data that you don’t sync to iCloud. So, for example, if you sync photos to iCloud then photos will not be included in a backup; if you don’t sync photos to iCloud they will be included in a backup.
Hmm-guess this is going to turn into a "patience game". Thanks for your reply.
My apologies to you and especially to the OP.
No apology necessary. It’s really pretty confusing and hard to explain. I wish they didn’t call them “iCloud backups”.
No worries--thanks for the reply.
This was helpful--thank you.
