Turn off HomePod's Auto Play when streaming from iTunes

After purchasing a HomePod mini, I discovered that it would fill up, and auto-play, more songs from my iTunes Library. I'd rather it didn't auto-play anything so that when I tap it after it's been off, I don't get a random piece of music playing. That's annoying.

Researching this issue, there's a way to turn off Auto Play--but it seems only available when you're streaming from an Apple Music subscription. It involves selecting the currently playing song, tapping the Next icon, and then tapping the Auto Play icon (looks like an infinity symbol) to toggle it on or off.

This icon is only available when streaming from Apple Music, not from my iPhone's Library.

Is there a work-around other than subscribing to Apple Music?

Well, I got a survey from Apple about my buying experience. There was a comment field about my set-up experience and I fully detailed the issue.

And I gave up on the HomePod...too much fiddling around to get things straightened out (particularly the Auto Play issue).

I returned it to my Apple Store and have ordered an Amazon Echo 4th Generation. Which led me to download the Alexa app and get used to it before the Echo arrives. Pleasantly surprised with Alexa (it can read in a natural voice any Kindle book and it plays Amazon Music feeds without a subscription (but with ads). Not too bad...
