Installing Samsung SCX-3405W on macOS Monterey (12.1)

I just got a Macbook Air M1 2020 and can't seem to be able to add my printer correctly.

I've found some solutions, such as the following, that is on another post here in the communities:

It means, that you need to install Samsung SL-M2070 driver on your mac.
(Samsung Universal Print DriverV3.93.01 19.7 MB Feb 11, 2021)
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/SS/Print_Common_SW/Samsung_Mac_Driver_V3.93.01.dmg
Solve "Defender installation problem" with Instruction above using terminal.app
After that, install MAC_Printer > Printer driver.pkg and MAC_ICDM > ICDM.pkg
Than you can add Samsung SCX-3405W via USB cable (System preferences > Printers & scanners, +add)

After doing the above, I was able to finally add the printer, but still unable to print when I choose to print some document. I really need some help!

Hi,

The Samsung SCX-3405W is listed as an HP SCX-3405W in About AirPrint - Apple Support. This means that the model in question is supporting the driverless AirPrint technology, so you should be able to use the printer without having to install any drivers, provided that the SCX-3405W and the MacBook Air are connected to the same network/Wi-Fi router.

You may want to check whether any firmware updates are available for the printer.

Fortunately, my network router has a WPS button on it, so I was able to set the printer up on my Wi-Fi network.

I wonder if I'd be able to do this if WPS wasn't possible, since I don't have a windows computer that could set up the printer on Wi-Fi.

Anyway, that's just me wondering...

It's worked and I am currently able to print through AirPrint.

Thank you.

You could perhaps check firmware updates/upgrades via the SyncThru Web Service Maintenance tab. See page 272 in the manual at http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05786719.pdf#G14.4944743 .

Firmware downloads are also available from the HP support web site at https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/samsung-scx-3405-laser-multifunction-printer-series/17157049/model/17157054 , but only with Windows 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, or XP chosen as the operating system.

Hello André B.,

Thank you for the report. You're welcome! Glad to hear that it worked.

WPS is just the wireless connection (Wi-Fi) setup to the router. Normally, the alternative would be a fully manual configuration, which may be possible with both a Mac and a Windows computer.

What I was referring to above is the printer firmware. That is, the built-in printer "operating system". This is a different matter. Updates may enhance earlier versions of the firmware, for example, with respect to AirPrint capabilities.

It may be possible to use the SyncThru Web Service (see pp. 140 and 271 in the manual at http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05786719#G14.4944743) and its Maintenance tab (page 272) through the use of a standard web browser, once the printer is connected to a router. A Network Configuration Report (page 141 in the manual) may be of interest.

Otherwise, the HP support page for the SCX-3405W (https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/samsung-scx-3405-laser-multifunction-printer-series/17157049/model/17157054) has a firmware file V3.00.02.05 with a release date Sep 1, 2017 (file name SCX3405W_V3.00.02.05.zip). This firmware file can be seen if you choose Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, or 8.1 as the operating system. A Windows PC appears to be used in this case. I do not know what this update contains. If at all needed, I would suggest that you contact HP and ask them whether this file is suitable and contains the latest firmware for your printer.

Your printer appears to have firmware capable of handling AirPrint already. Do not install anything unless absolutely necessary. If you decide to try to update the firmware, make sure that you follow all instructions from the printer manufacturer to the letter.
