Wifi Privacy Warning “blocking encrypted DNS”

My iPad, running 15.2.1, has recently started showing a privacy warning against my home Wifi in settings. The Wifi is a BT Whole Home “mesh” system connected into a Sky Q router. No changes have been made to the Wifi set up in well over a year. It is also showing on my wife’s devices which are running 15.2, so it doesn’t look like something that has come in with the .1 release. Turning “private IP address” off doesn’t resolve the issue.

What actually triggers this message and how can you prevent it. It is possible that the message has been there since upgrading to iOS15 as my home Wifi has been so rock steady for ages that I seldom need to check it.

My iPad is a 2017 iPad 5th gen, my wife’s is a mini 4. The warning isn’t showing on my 2020 iPhone SE.

Thanks for replying to me but the answer in the thread you reference doesn’t help. It deals with the fact that the network can see the device’s MAC address and says to switch private IP address on. Private IP address was already on for this network, and as my post states, toggling it on and off makes no difference.

The privacy warning makes a very specific reference to the network blocking encrypted dns messages.

Hi Dcjsimons01, thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities.

A previous and similar discussion on this (albeit using an iPhone) with a resolution kindly provided by a Community Specialist may help with your iPad WiFi privacy warning issue. The link is as follows:

It also has links to Apples recommended settings for WiFi routers and access points.

From what I have read the message only gets triggered once the Apple device has detected a certain number of the encrypted dns messages have been blocked. I have seen several threads where people say the message clears by deleting the network and re-establishing it, only for it to come back some time later. Presumably when a threshold has been hit.

That would actually explain why I see it on my iPad but not my iPhone for the same network. I use the iPad a lot more than the phone on the home Wifi, and certainly use Safari a lot more which is what will generate the encrypted dns messages. On my phone I tend to just access mail and apps and not use the browser as much.

I am all for Apple introducing new security features, but when the vast majority of users network routers won’t support the feature they out to make it configurable.

Will be interesting to see how long yours goes for before the warning comes up again. Several days seems common.
