In theory one might be able to jump from El Capitan to Monterey but really suggest taking a more measured approach.
Suggest upgrading at least to Mojave macOS 10.14 first.
This will better prepare the computer .
It should convert the Drive from old HFS Journaled to the new APFS which is required for Catalina and all newer versions of macOS.
It may also bring new EFI Boot ROMs required to allow the computer to understand and use the new APFS drive format.
The Age of this computer will Govern what newer version of macOS it will Qualify to install. Use About this Mac from the Apple Icon on Desktop - the required Information will be there.
With the above information in-hand - follow this How to get old versions of macOS and verify what version this computer Qualifies to install. For Best results use Safari to commence the download as Others may not work.
Safari will open a redirect and open the Apple Store where the download can commence

Make Time Machine Backup is very useful and can be used to Revert to Previous Working macOS
Notation - Mojave is the Last version to support 32 bit applications / extensions and Drivers. Catalina, Big Sur & Monterey supports only 64 bit and there is no workaround.
Suggest using Go64 to find 32 bit application before attempting the upGrade. Some or many of the Application already installed may required update or upGrades to 64 Bit Versions.
Are there any AntiVirus, Disk Cleaner, Optimizers, Un-installers, etc installed which should be removed as per Developers Instructions. They are useless, unneeded, cause havoc and interfere with the normal operation of the OS and may even Corrupt the OS requiring a Reinstallation
Many thanks for your time and information. I had completed time machine backup and actually had also tried an earlier version with no success. The download appears to commence and then just gets stuck. I have decided to go to a computer shop where I think my problem will be seen as a straightforward process. I've been struggling for a few days and have at least learnt to backup and considerably 'tidy up' and reduce what's in my storage but fear with not knowing what I'm doing will do more harm than good if I continue. Thanks again.
The download appears to start but gets stuck at about 80% completed. Thanks for your help but I've decided to go to a computer shop and pay for an update to be installed, I'm not sufficiently computer literate and likewise none on the "oldies" around me are. Thanks again.
Just to update, I had a few days off, cleared my storage a bit more and thought I'd have one more go. I updated to High Sierra very easily, which is an improvement. I'll probably leave it for at least a few weeks but when I look to update again do you suggest I go straight to Monterey or stage it again? Many thanks.
Judging from what I am seeing on the Apple Support Community Forums - staged seem to be the more reliable method.
Some but not all who jump from older versions to Monterey have some negative consequences.
El Capitan I mean.
