How do I update to the latest macOS?

I need to update my MacBook to OS v10.15, however whenever I go to the app store I get a message that there are no updates to be installed. How do I update to the latest macOS?


MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which MacBook Pro model you have, click on Catalina, Big Sur, or Monterey; they're full-version upgrades and won't appear in the Updates list. It needs to be at least a 2012 one to run a newer OS.


Catalina and newer won't run 32-bit software; download and use Go64 to scan for it. To check other programs, click here and look them up.
