Apple Pay on a Mac without Touch ID or Touch Bar

In the past, when I paid with Apple Pay using my Mac, the payment approval screen simply popped up on my phone and I approved it there. Easy peasy.

Now, it seems I need to use my Mac. And it's a disaster. I neither have a Touch Bar or Touch ID and double clicking on the Touch ID icon at checkout does absolutely nothing (which is contrary to Apple's own instructions that say it should allow you to just enter your password).

Does anyone have a fix? I'd like to use ApplePay but it seems that Apple ruined it. The old way was perfect.

  1. On iPhone go to settings>Wallet & Apple Pay>allow payment on Mac - turn it off then back on. If that does not work
  2. on the Mac go to iCloud.com>sign in>go to account settings>tap the Mac>remove Apple Pay from device if it has that option.
  3. Make sure all devices are using the latest iOS/macOS updates.
