I would like to know if I should update system as it won’t access my Mac email account and it does not trust servers on almost every website (including Apple support) I try to visit

We need to know if this is just a 2012, or a late 2012, what Mac OS are you running currently? In the upper left hand corner of your screen find the Apple Icon. click it, pull down to "About This Mac." It will give you this information and you can pass it on to us so we can advise you.
Your Safari may be too far out of date.
