Apple's NFC-tag communication is not as squeaky-clean as it is promoted. We are told "NFC simply allows data to pass between two compatible devices, and ultimately, facilitating a data transfer." A bit misleading in that “data transfer” also includes forced and uninvited communication from any company product equipped with a microchip wishing to
engage its intended target. Ferragamo is not the only company embedding microchips in its wares. Ferragamo claims that they use microchips to ensure authenticity of their products. Ferragamo claims the communication is activated when the
owner has his/her phone and product (wallet) held in hand. Either Ferragamo is being deceptive or simply does not know how their microchip functions. I have found these irrelevant intrusions occur regardless of whether they are
physically being held. I have seen these notifications popup when both the phone and wallet are positioned apart and resting on a coffee table. This behavior is far different than Ferragamo's explanation. Although, these microchips are read-only, this is Apple’s problem as there is no way to disable this intrusive and potentially aberrant feature. It is reasonable to question why this feature cannot be disabled and inquire about the propensity of manufacturers to exploit this feature. The next time I purchase a jean, shirt, hat, belt, or shoes, I should verify if microchips are embedded and then await the barrage of NFC Advertising popups. My point is the depth of this capability was suppressed and will eventually become another outlet to monitor and spam the public.
