i tried recovering my phone but itunes is still asking for a passcode

my son broke the screen on his phone and in the process of taking it to get the screen replaced, the wrong passcode was "entered" so many times that now i get the "iphone is disabled, connect to itunes" message. however, when i try to Restore or Update my phone through itunes, i continue to get another error message that says that i need to enter the passcode on the phone to finish the process. i'm just going in endless circles. :( can anyone help?
