Process "filecoordinationd" taking up 100% of CPU lately

My Macbook Pro 2015 running Mojave has been making a lot of noice the last four-five days. Checking the activity monitor shows that the process "filecoordinationd" is using 100% or more of the CPU. This has not happened before. I can't quit the process (or, nothing happens when I try). Searching for the process gives very generic information about it being involved in file transfer, a root process.

But what could be happening in the background on my computer? Any ideas? Or ideas on how I can find it out?
