CarPlay
Did I have to purchase subscription on the CarPlay app & download to my phone to use in my new car? My friends said it cost nothing but I paid $60???

No idea what you bought, but it wasn't "CarPlay". At least not the phone feature. CarPlay is built into iOS and Apple does not charge for it.
Some auto manufacturers, however, are moving to a subscription model to make more money...
Depending on the car, you may need to "subscribe" to that feature to enable it on the head unit in your car.
