1) Try quitting the Browser or App that was using it.

2) Startup in Safe Mode, Empty the Trash and restart normally.

Since Carbon Copy Cloner no longer reliably makes bootable clones on our iMacs, each of the three has an external SSD Bootable system.

Th only way I could remove the zombie files without wiping and reinstalling the OS, was to boot into the Mac's standby drive. Once I did that I could access the folder on the internal drive with the file and delete it.

Before doing this, I "Put Back" the file in the Trash to its original location.

I understand you have a file in the Trash that refuses to be deleted.

First try these simple initial steps, in increasing order of inconvenience.

First hold an Option key while emptying the Trash. That probably won't work, so restart the Mac and try again. If that doesn't work, try restarting your Mac in "Safe Mode" and try again, while operating in that mode. How to use safe mode on your Mac. Then, restart normally and try again.

If you don't succeed, then follow the steps described in this old Discussion:

"File cannot be deleted" ? - Apple Community

Please pay attention to the warnings described by its experienced helpers. I don't even want to repeat those instructions here due to the potential risk of making an error or being misunderstood. I can only confirm the accuracy of those instructions. Follow them with care.

Back up your Mac as a matter of course. To learn how to use Time Machine please read Back up your files with Time Machine on Mac. You ought to be doing that anyway, but if you are not, do not proceed without a backup.

I was afraid of that. You are encountering what I call a "zombie file" which may prove impossible to eradicate. Although I cannot guarantee success in your case, I was able to duplicate and resolve that particular issue in the past.

You will need to patiently read the proposed solutions in this Discussion:

Impossible to delete file - Catalina

The replies in that Discussion are sound; just be sure to follow along carefully as you adapt them to your circumstances. There are two pages so be sure to read it all the way to the end. Unfortunately I don't believe the OP ever resolved the problem.

The fact you were knowledgeable enough to use Terminal eases my concerns a great deal. Following the steps in that Discussion will demand you take those skills to the next level.

It can't be emphasized enough though: back up!
