Since the release of macOS 12 Monterey in November 2021 - the method of getting macOS 11 Big Sur has changed. Instead of searching on the Apple Store , the method is as per below " How to get old versions of macOS "

The Age of this computer will Govern what newer version of macOS it will Qualify to install. Use About this Mac from the Apple Icon on Desktop - the required Information will be there.

With the above information in-hand - follow this >>>>> How to get old versions of macOS and verify what version this computer Qualifies to install.  For Best results use Safari to commence the download as Others may not work.

Safari will open a redirect and open the Apple Store where the download can commence

Are there any AntiVirus, Disk Cleaner, Optimizers, Un-installers, etc installed which should be removed as per Developers Instructions. They are useless, unneeded, cause havoc and interfere with the normal  operation of the OS and may even Corrupt the OS requiring a Reinstallation

That is because once Monterey was released in late October 2021 - the Big Sur was hidden on the Apple Apps Store. It is there but one needs to get to it via a different method.

Computer Qualify for the Monterey upgrade

macOS Big Sur 11 hardware requirements

macOS Catalina 10.15 hardware requirements

macOS Mojave 10.14 hardware requirements

macOS High Sierra 10.13 hardware requirements

macOS Sierra 10.12 hardware requirements

OS X El Capitan - Technical Specifications

Caution - jumping over all the newer versions and directly to Big Sur  / Monterey on Qualifying computers is Technically possible - there are those who have attempted and were successful. Then there are those who attempted and had less than good results.

If this is a Production or Mission Critical Set-up - a more prudent and measure approach is suggested.

The above is from observations on the Apple Support Community Forums and IMHO

Tips Big Sir Upgrade Released Nov 2020

Tips Monterey Upgrade  Released Oct 25, 2021

Make Time Machine Backup  is very useful and can be used to Revert to Previous Working macOS

Notation - Mojave is the Last version to support 32 bit applications / extensions and Drivers. Catalina, Big Sur & Monterey supports only 64 bit and there is no workaround.

Suggest using Go64 to find 32 bit application before attempting the upGrade. Some or many of the Application already installed may required update or upGrades to 64 Bit Versions.

Depending on what version is installed right now the below may work or may not work. The command will work if running Catalina macOS 10.15

Terminal, copy and paste without quotation marks

"  softwareupdate --list-full-installers " What is the output ?

Then next command again without quotation mark

" softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 11.6.X " where the X is the actual version number as per the previous output listing the versions available as Full Version of Big Sur

So please understand what I am saying. I have included the "usage" for softwareupdate...

Problem 1: there is no legal argument for "--list-full-installer" or "--list-full-installers".

usage: softwareupdate <cmd> [<args> ...]

** Manage Updates:
-l | --list List all appropriate update labels (options:  --no-scan, --product-types)
	-d | --download Download Only
	-e | --cancel-download Cancel a download
	-i | --install Install
		<label> ...	specific updates
-a | --all All appropriate updates
-R | --restart Automatically restart (or shut down) if required to complete installation.
-r | --recommended	Only recommended updates
--fetch-full-installer Install the latest macOS Installer
--full-installer-version	The version of macOS to install. Ex: --full-installer-version 10.15
--background Trigger a background scan and update operation
--ignore <label> ...	Ignore specific updates
	--reset-ignored Clear all ignored updates

** Other Tools:
--dump-state Log the internal state of the SU daemon to /var/log/install.log
--evaluate-products	Evaluate a list of product keys specified by the --products option
--history Show the install history.  By default, only displays updates installed by softwareupdate.
--all Include all processes in history (including App installs)

** Options:
--no-scan Do not scan when listing or installing updates (use available updates previously scanned)
--product-types <type> Limit a scan to a particular product type only - ignoring all others
		Ex:  --product-types macOS  || --product-types macOS,Safari
--products A comma-separated (no spaces) list of product keys to operate on.
--force Force an operation to complete.  Use with --background to trigger a background scan regardless of "Automatically check" pref

	--verbose Enable verbose output
	--help Print this help

Problem 2: I've tried "softwareupdate --list --product-types macOS" and "softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 11.6.4" and neither return ANYTHING. For the fetch full installer, it says "Downloading and installing 11.6.1 installer". However, nothing is actually happening.

Have you actually downloaded the installer recently with these commands? I am on Catalina today and my MacPook Pro IS supported by Big Sur.

My MacBook Pro 15" 2018 has Catalina 10.15.7.

If you understand a "USAGE" response from the command line you will see why "softwareupgrade --list-full-installers" will NOT WORK and DOES NOT work. The following is the output from the command you repeatedly recommend and clearly have not tried recently...

I appreciate that you are trying to help. But please listen to the feedback you are getting. Maybe there is something else needed?
