Black screen of death? 8th gen iPad

IPad started acting up yesterday. Right after entering the passcode, I get a black screen with the spinning wheel. It will sit there for a while (spinning wheel is frozen sometimes), then flash to the background image sometimes multiple times before it completely restarts with the apple startup screen. Also, when the passcode screen comes up, it says that the passcode needs to be entered when restarted. My daughter didn't restart the iPad at all. She was playing games on it when this started.

I've tried doing a hard restart many times, and also plugging the iPad in until fully charged.

Wondering what other options I have so I can fix this. Thanks!
