Is your Apple ID account balanced and your payment info correct? Without that, apps can't be updated. You'll need at least that much credit, to be able to buy an app, in order to update your existing apps on your device.
Check your Apple ID balance - Apple Support
If your payment method is declined in the App Store or iTunes Store - Apple Support
