Monterey update

I recently got a notofication on my 2017 Macbook Air that i should update from Sierra High to Monterey. I downloaded the update, but while installing it (black screen with apple logo and loading bar) it got stuck, and wouldn't move for hours (I tried restarting several times). At last I held down shift while booting and the mac finally started with Monterey, but i had to create a new account -with my old account being gone. I since i tried to restart from the startup disk, but now the Monterey update gets stuck again...

How do i get my account back, or update to Monterey (without the download stopping) on my starter disk?

Any help would be appreciated.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.13
